CHAPTER 36

SHERYN

When Sheryn returned to Manhattan North and walked into the squad room, she heard her lieutenant’s booming voice announce, “There she is. Detective Sterling cracked the Baxter case in less than twelve hours.”

There was an instantaneous round of applause from her brothers and sisters in blue. She froze for a moment, half fearing she’d walked into one of her nightmares and wasn’t wearing any pants. Applause wasn’t rare at the precinct—whenever they solved a case, there was often a moment like this to celebrate—but Sheryn knew this particular victory lap was premature. Her lips tightened, and she gave her lieutenant a look, but he was beaming at her and clapping in that precise way of his, where his left hand never moved while the right batted it like a flipper.

Rafael stepped toward her, balancing with a gold-topped cane. “You should’ve warned me,” she said, raising an eyebrow.

“And miss out on the fun?” he asked. “It’s not like anyone clapped for me when I hobbled in.”

“Thanks, everyone,” Sheryn said. The clapping died down as she made her way to her desk.

“Thank you, Detective Sterling, for your dedication and determination,” the lieutenant said. Stiff and formal as he was, there was an emotional intelligence about him that Sheryn had long appreciated. With one cool nod of his sleek silver head, the cops went right back to work.

“I’ve gotten quite the earful about your tremendous work, Detective,” he said. “You’ve met Assistant District Attorney Vedika Iyer, I’m sure.”

“I have.” Sheryn shook hands with the ADA. She didn’t know her well, but they’d crossed paths a couple of times since Iyer had transferred from Houston to New York. “It’s been a while.”

“It’s good to see you,” Iyer said. She was petite but didn’t look small with her lustrous black hair fanned out like a mane, a sharp red suit, and towering heels. Sheryn had long ago adopted a uniform that was meant to communicate her authority without giving away much of her personality: dark pantsuits, tall boots, her hair pinned into a large bun. She was comfortable with that, but Iyer’s look was making her think maybe she needed a red suit jacket in her rotation.

“You too,” Sheryn said.

“Great work on the case. You’re wanted at One Police Plaza,” Iyer said.

“For what?”

“For the press conference.”

For a nanosecond, Sheryn was flattered. It was a rare occasion to get an invitation like that; her old partner would’ve been thrilled. Play the game, Sandy liked to say, and there was nothing more career boosting than enhancing your profile in the department. At the same time, Sheryn knew it was a terrible idea. “It’s way too early to be taking any bows on this. We’re still investigating.”

The lieutenant turned to the ADA. “I thought you said you’d filed homicide charges this morning.”

Sheryn stared at Iyer. “You did what? We are nowhere near done. Not by a long shot.”

Iyer’s smile evaporated. “We’ve got the murder weapon, DNA, fingerprints, and an eyewitness. We’ve got the blackmail letters. We’ve got Baxter’s laptop.
